The Chico Police Department Explorer Post #637 is an organization for young men and women; future leaders between the ages of 14 and 21 who are interested in a career in law enforcement and WE ARE LOOKING FOR YOU!
The EXPLORER program introduces youth to:
- Career Opportunities in Law Enforcement
- Leadership Experience
- Exemplary Citizenship and Respect for Others
- Life Skills
- Character Education and Ethical Decision Making
The EXPLORER program instills confidence, discipline, self-respect, respect for others and participants focus on the importance of teamwork.
How does the EXPLORER program work?
Explorers are required to donate at least 10 hours a month, which includes weekly, hands-on and role-playing scenarios. Trainings cover topics such as ethics, physical fitness and law enforcement tactics and various legal issues involved with law enforcement careers. Explorers take part in “on-the-job” trainings, including riding-along with patrol officers and observing dispatch operations.
What activities do EXPLORERS take part in?
Explorers take part in various Community Service Events
Explorers join youth from agencies around the country for EXPLORER competitions which test skills such as routine and high-risk traffic stops, domestic violence calls, building searches, crime scene investigations and many other law enforcement related activities.

Young men and women who join the EXPLORER program are paving the way to a more successful future and obtaining a career in law enforcement. Prospective employers evaluate volunteer work and previous experience when considering qualified applicants. Former Chico Police Explorers have secured careers with the Chico Police Department, Sacramento Police Department, Oroville Police Department and the United States Military.
