Use of Force Instructor

The Chico Police Department has a group of 8 instructors, 1 sergeant and 7 officers, responsible for creating and implementing all training in the area of perishable physical skills necessary for department members to safely conduct their duties in the field. This is a voluntary assignment and is probably the most physically demanding of any police assignment in the department.

Training is categorized into three areas: Arrest & Control Techniques, Baton Techniques, and Self-defense Techniques. Each instructor must attend an annual refresher course in each area of expertise which consists of 40 hrs. of rigorous physical training as well as a written and physical performance exam. Each instructor must pass the written and physical exams with a minimum score of 90% or better, depending on their level of experience. Each area of instruction has a minimum number of hours required before an officer may return to their department and instruct department personnel. The requirements are 120 hrs. for Arrest & Control, 120 hrs. for Self-defense, and 40 hrs. for Baton.

Our instructors are a very dedicated group, with our junior instructor having 3 yrs. in the program and our most senior instructor with more than 15 yrs. as an instructor. Our instructors are very motivated to provide department personnel with on-going quality training in order to ensure each member develops the skills necessary to safely perform the duties of a police officer and return to their families at the end of each shift.
