Chico Police Qualifications and Testing
Entry Level
You must be at least 18 years of age and be a citizen of the United States; or be a permanent resident alien and have applied for citizenship.
Lateral Officer
In addition to entry-level requirements, to qualify for a lateral position you must have at least two years experience as a law enforcement officer.
Entry-Level and Lateral Education Requirements
High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by a POST Basic Academy Certificate.
Testing
The hiring process contains the following components:
Written Exercise
This test measures basic skills such as report writing, reading comprehension, reasoning ability, observation and memory.
Physical Agility
This is a measure of coordination, agility, balance and strength.
Oral Board Interview
The oral interview evaluates job-related skills such as oral communication, interpersonal skills and judgement.
Polygraph Test
Candidates are assessed for background suitability and integrity through the use of the polygraph exams.
Background Investigation
Candidates are subject to a check of background suitability. Investigators contact family, employers, references and others to verify information provided by the candidate. Driving, credit and criminal records are also investigated.
Processing
Candidates are assessed for compliance with the psychological and medical standards of the position. Issues that may arise in the background are resolved.
