Crime Analysis Unit
The Crime Analysis Unit is staffed by a management level Crime Analyst who is certified by the California Department of Justice. The Crime Analyst reports directly to the Support Division Captain. The Crime Analysis Unit is responsible for all aspects of crime analysis including, but not limited to, standard crime analysis (defined below), crime mapping, data input quality control, networking with other crime analysis units in the region, and other various tasks in support of the Chief of Police, the Operations Division, and the Support Division.
Crime Analysis Defined
Crime Analysis is the systematic process of collecting, collating, analyzing, and disseminating timely, accurate, and useful information that describes crime patterns, crime trends, and potential suspects. Crime Analysis can be subdivided into three main types:
Tactical Crime Analysis
Provides information to assist operations personnel in the identification of specific crime problems and the arrest of criminal offenders.
Strategic Crime Analysis
Provides information concerning long-range crime problems. Strategic crime analysis provides information concerning crime rate variations and may also provide resource acquisition and allocation information.
Administrative Crime Analysis
Provides economic, geographic, social, and/or other types of general information to administrators.
