Calls for Service

When a citizen calls our Dispatch Center to report a crime or other incident needing our attention, the information given is entered into our Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer system and a "call for service" is created. Calls for service are also generated when an officer notifies our Dispatch Center that he or she is taking some action, such as making a traffic stop, stopping to talk to a citizen, viewing and responding to a crime in progress, etc. These calls have been counted for the past years and mapped for the previous year. A graph showing the relationship between "Calls For Service" and population for the City of Chico is accessible through the link to the right

A map showing the location by Census Block of "Calls For Service" for 2003 is also accessible to the right. Due to the large variety in size of Census Blocks in Chico, the "Calls For Service" were counted within each block and then divided by the area of each block in order to normalize the data geographically.

Another map is provided that displays the locations of all false alarm calls for 2003. We responded to 2,225 of these calls in 2003 and spent a total of over 994 officer hours responding to and dealing with these calls. Office staff spend another 144 hours per year (approximately) preparing false alarm warning notices and fielding inquiries.
