RESTROOM CONSTRUCTION BEGINS AT ONE MILE RECREATION AREA
Groundbreaking for the new permanent restroom building at the One Mile Recreation Area is scheduled for August 30, 2010. The new structure will be located in the north side parking lot off of Vallombrosa.
CONSTRUCTION OF DISC GOLF 18-HOLE COURSE TO BEGIN AT BIDWELL PARK HWY 32 SITE
Starting September 4, volunteers from the non-profit organization Outdoor Recreational Advocacy, Inc., will be removing the targets of both the short and long disc golf courses to make way for the reconstruction of the long course.
FILBERT AVENUE DRAINAGE PROJECT
Beginning Monday, August 23, and continuing through early fall, R.J. Heuton Construction, Inc., and its subcontractors will be performing construction work on Filbert Avenue between Bryant and Moss Avenues. The project involves removing and replacing curb, gutter, and sidewalk, and drainage improvements.
ART RECEPTION FOR CURRENT EXHIBIT AT MUNICIPAL CENTER
As part of the Rotating Art Exhibit Program, the City has installed an exhibit of etchings, drypoints, and monotypes by Garnetta Finnegan. A reception will be held for the artist on September 9 at 5:00, in the lobby of the Municipal Building. The art work will be displayed through January 2011 on all three floors of the City of Chico Municipal Center Building at 411 Main Street.
NEW GATE AND RESTROOM HOURS FOR PARK FACILITIES
The City of Chico Park Division announced new gate and restroom hours for several public and park facilities. The changes have been proposed as a result of staff reductions and an effort to allow for better availability of Park Rangers during peak visitor times in the park. The shift will provide clearer clsoing times to park users. Changes afftect winter hours more than the summer hours.
MOUNTAIN LION ACTIVITY REPORTED AT TEICHERT PONDS
City of Chico Park Rangers responded to a report of a possible mountain lion sighting at Teichert Ponds. A couple observed what they described as a juvenile mountain lion near the boundary with the Kohl's parking lot. After a site visit, Park Rangers also reported that an angler had observed what appeared to be about a 50-60 pound mountain lion in the area. Neither report indicated that the mountain lion behaved aggressively.
BIG CHICO CREEK RUNNING FAST AND COLD
Visitors looking to escape Chico's hot weather by cooling off in Big Chico Creek should be prepared for icy temperatures. Due to the unseasonably cool weather and late precipitation this spring, Big Chico Creek is still running fast and cold. The water in local creeks can be deceiving. Parts of Big Chico Creek have swift moving and frigid waters and visitors can be caught by the water current and pinned against rocks or trees.
SYCAMORE POOL AT ONE MILE NOW OPEN
During the swimming season, the One Mile pool will be closed every Thursday for cleaning and no lifeguards will be on duty.
RENOVATION OF CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND
Renovation of Children’s Playground at 206 W. 1st Street in downtown Chico is underway. The project will include demolition of the existing playground equipment and installation of new, larger play equipment.
RATTLESNAKE SEASON IN BIDWELL PARK
The City has received several reports of rattlesnake sightings in Bidwell Park and would like to remind park users that rattlesnakes will become more prevalent as the weather turns warmer, and to use caution when hiking, biking, or walking in the park.
DRAFT CHICO GENERAL PLAN 2030 AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW & COMMENT
The City of Chico is pleased to release the draft Chico 2030 General Plan for public review and comment. The General Plan is a statement of the community’s priorities and provides a policy framework to guide growth and preservation in Chico.
POSSIBLE MOUNTAIN LION ACTIVITY IN UPPER & LOWER BIDWELL PARK
The City has received reports of possible mountain lion activity in both Upper and Lower Bidwell Park. Although the chance of meeting a mountain lion is extremely small, the City would like to remind park users that mountain lions are part of Bidwell Park’s natural environment. This press release offers several precautions park users may take upon encountering a mountain lion.
The proper use of trails is an important issue in keeping Bidwell Park healthy. Protecting the Bidwell Park trail system depends on public support.
A PERMIT IS REQUIRED TO REMOVE CITY TREES
The City of Chico wants to warn homeowners to be wary if approached by anyone other than the City about removing a City tree, especially in exchange for or if offered payment for the wood.
CITY GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT HERE TO HELP
The City of Chico General Services Department is responsible for many parts of the City Public Right-of-Way infrastructure including potential hazards in the public right-of-way.
ILLEGAL SIGNS CAUSING PROBLEMS
The City of Chico is experiencing a problem with signs advertising yard and garage sales, real estate for sale/lease signs, and other advertising signs being illegally displayed.
