SALARY
Entry/Lateral: $4,429—$5,935 per month
Reserve: Stipend of $75 (Level III), $100 (Level II), or
$125 (Level I) per month

THE CITY
The City of Chico is one of Northern California’s fastest
growing cities. With a population of over 87,000
situated in an urban area of over 115,000, the City is a
regional hub for commerce, education, entertainment
and medical care. Chico is home to the third largest
municipally owned park in the nation, Bidwell Park,
and California State University, Chico. Chico is an
exciting community with a wide-range of activities and
events typically found in much larger metropolitan
areas. At the same time, Chico offers a wonderful sense
of community and retains the charm of a small town.
Chico is located in an area that provides an abundance
of opportunities for recreational sports and hobbies
such as hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and golfing.
Additionally, the department's convenient work
schedules allow ample time to enjoy these cultural and
recreational resources. Currently, the Chico Police
Department is comprised of 140 employees, 97 of
which are sworn Police Officers.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 18 years of age;
- A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien and have applied for citizenship;
- High School graduation or equivalent;
- Required to join Chico Police Officers’ Association
Entry Requirements:
A valid POST Basic Academy Certificate is required.
(If you have not completed the Academy, you must
provide written verification that you are currently
enrolled and attending a POST-certified Academy.)
Lateral Requirements:
Applicants with a minimum of two years paid
experience as a full-time sworn Police Officer can be
considered lateral candidates.
Reserve Requirements:
Level III Reserve requires completion of the California
POST approved Level III Module. Level II Reserve must
complete California POST approved Level III and Level
II Modules. Level I Reserve must complete California
POST approved Level III, Level II, and Level I
Modules, or the regular California POST Basic Police
Academy and a Field Training Program as defined by
POST. ALL RESERVE POSITIONS REQUIRE
VOLUNTEER SERVICE TIME OF AT LEAST 20
HOURS PER MONTH.
TESTING & BACKGROUND
Written Exam: The City of Chico utilizes the POST
Entry-level Law Enforcement test battery. For more
information on the POST Entry-level Law Enforcement
test battery and how to obtain a “T-score” please visit
the POST website at: www.post.ca.gov. Click on “Hiring” and then click on "Exams/Assessments”.
Exemptions: Entry and Reserve applicants desiring to
waive the written examination are required to submit
proof of a valid and recent (issued within one year)
T-score of 47 or higher with their application packet.
Applicants who do not submit a valid T-score will be
required to participate in the written exam .
Qualified Lateral applicants are exempt from taking
the written exam but are required to pass the oral and
physical agility exams in order to be considered.
Physical Agility Exam: All applicants will be
required to participate in a physical agility exam. This
is a pass/fail exam.
Oral Interview: Qualified applicants will be
scheduled for an oral interview. Ranking on the
Employment Eligibility List will be based on oral board
scores received.
Additional Information:
All applicants must be able to pass a detailed
background investigation, polygraph examination,
psychological evaluation, and drug screening prior
to being selected for a position with the City of
Chico Police Department.
