Job Title

Volunteer Firefighter

Definition

Under direction of the Fire Chief, to participate in training and drills; respond to fire calls and other emergency calls; provide support and assistance to regular City Fire Department staff as needed.

Typical Duties

Respond to all fire and rescue alarms as required; engage in fire fighting activities which include: set up and use of hoses, ladders, self-contained breathing apparatus, and other firefighting equipment; ventilate buildings or homes; render first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; assist in salvage and clean-up operations; assist at hazardous materials emergencies at the operational level; follow fire department rules and safety procedures; participate in regularly scheduled drills and training sessions, learning fire suppression, safety, and emergency response skills; operate fire department vehicles not requiring specialized driver licenses (Trained volunteer firefighters who possess specialized drivers licenses may drive appropriate fire department vehicles, when there are no full time firefighters on duty and able to drive, with written approval of the Fire Chief.); and perform related duties as assigned.

Tools and Equipment Used

Emergency medical aid unit, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, first aid equipment, radio, pager, personal computer, phone.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; and taste or smell.


The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.


The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of

English usage, spelling, and punctuation.

Ability to

Understand and follow department rules, guidelines, and written firefighting and rescue instructions; ability to learn and develop skills in firefighting techniques and procedures; ability to analyze fire behavior and to adopt effective courses of action; ability to retain presence of mind in emergency situations; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to meet physical performance standards established by the City.

Experience/Education

High School graduation or equivalent or other evidence of ability to read and write at a level needed to perform the above duties.

Additional Requirement

Candidates must be at least 18 years old by date of appointment. Candidates must possess a valid Class C California Driver License and reside within 10 miles of the Highway 99/32 intersection.
