Tree Maintenance Worker II
Definition
Under general supervision, to climb and trim and plant City trees; to remove trees in the street rights-of-way; to operate and maintain climbing and trimming equipment; to operate Type B and Type C power driven equipment; to perform related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a journey level position in the tree maintenance series of classifications. Employees appointed to this class usually have some experience in tree trimming and climbing, use of specialized equipment used in tree trimming, as well as general construction and maintenance experience and perform a variety of semi-skilled municipal maintenance tasks. Tree Maintenance Worker II employees may be required to provide guidance to less experienced employees as assigned.
Typical Duties
Perform a variety of maintenance work in the maintenance of City trees and plants including perform tree pruning and removal; climb trees as required, inspect trees for diseases and pests; operate chipper, truck and other related equipment; keep records and make reports of supplies used, maintain tools and equipment; perform related duties as assigned.
Tools and Equipment Used
Type B and Type C equipment used in the maintenance, planting and removal of City trees.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to walk; talk and hear; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste and smell.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts is and occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of
Accepted tree trimming, pruning and general maintenance practices; use, maintenance and application of basic tools and equipment; tree types and methods of care and pruning; general grounds maintenance techniques.
Ability to
Climb trees with ease and work effectively in a variety of working conditions; operate tree trimming and climbing equipment in a safe and effective manner; perform heavy manual labor in varied assignments; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; read and write at the level necessary to perform the above; work independently in the absence of supervision; assist in the supervision and training of less experienced personnel.
Experience/Education
Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities that would be similar to two years of experience of that of City tree maintenance duties.
Additional Requirement
Possession of a valid California Class B Driver License. Ability to obtain an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Worker Certification, and Electrical Hazards Awareness Program (EHAP) certificate, within six months of appointment.
