Tree Maintenance Worker I

Definition

Under supervision, to perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in tree maintenance and other routine operation of public facilities; to operate Type C power driven equipment; to perform related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a trainee position in the tree maintenance series of classifications. After appropriate training and experience, the Tree Maintenance Worker I could reasonably expect to be promoted to Tree Maintenance Worker II , unless a permanent Tree Maintenance Worker I position has been established.

Typical Duties

Perform heavy routine manual labor in the maintenance of trees, parks, recreation areas, and other municipal facilities; load and unload material; excavate and backfill trenches with appropriate hand tools; clean gutters, drains and culverts; rake leaves, clean grounds and assist in spraying; cut weeds, clear brush and trim trees; operate, clean and maintain basic tools and equipment used on the job; may drive dump truck and other similar Type C power driven equipment; perform related duties as assigned.

Tools and Equipment Used

Type C equipment includes pick-up truck, 1-ton dump truck, 1-ton flatbed truck, water truck (without trailer), and chipper equipment used with the chip truck.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to walk; talk and hear; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste and smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color perception; and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts is and occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of

Use, maintenance and application of basic hand tools; safe work practices.

Ability to

Perform heavy manual labor; maintain and establish cooperative working relationships; understand and carry out oral and written directions; read and write at the level necessary to perform the above.

Experience/Education

Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. Some paid experience in maintenance or trees preferred.

Additional Requirement

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License.
