Senior Planner
Definition
Under general direction, to assume responsibility for a major portion of the City's current, long-range, and environmental planning programs, staff representative to the Planning Commission and Architectural Review Board; to perform difficult and complex professional work; to perform related work as required.
Typical Duties
Prepare, revise and implement the General Plan and other comprehensive plans as directed; supervise and participate in the conduct of complex planning studies and environmental evaluations of private and public projects; prepare environmental planning programs; prepare staff recommendations on revisions to various comprehensive plans and planning-related City ordinances; assist in the administration and enforcement of zoning and subdivision ordinances and codes; represents Planning Services by staffing various boards, commissions and committees; make authoritative interpretations of applicable regulations and policies; coordinate planning activities with other City departments, divisions offices and with outside agencies; represent City in the community and at professional meetings as required; respond to citizen complaints and requests for information; prepare and present staff reports and recommendations; supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff; perform related assignments as necessary.

Personal computer, including word processing, motor vehicle; calculator; phone; copy and fax machine; various graphic design tools.
Physical Demands
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office and moderate in the field.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of
Urban planning and design principles and practices; applicable Federal, State and local planning laws and regulations; organization and functions of the various offices and agencies involved in the planning process.
Ability to
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; prepare and interpret ordinances and formulate land use policies; organize, independently conduct and direct research studies; make effective and informative presentations; analyze and interpret statistical data and make applicable recommendations; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with City officials and employees, the general public and representatives of other agencies; supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff.
Experience
Two years of responsible professional planning experience, with at least one year performing duties comparable to that of the Associate Planner position with in the City of Chico. One year of supervisory experience is desired.
Education
Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning or related field. A Master's Degree in planning or related field is desirable.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid California Driver License; possess vision, hearing, strength and agility at a level necessary to perform the duties of a Police Officer.
