Senior Maintenance Worker
Definition
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of public works and parks maintenance tasks; to operate Type A, B, and C power-driven equipment; to perform related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is an advanced level in the field maintenance series. Positions assigned to this class are expected to perform semi-skilled and skilled public works, parks and recreational facility maintenance activities and to operate Type A, B, and C power-driven equipment on a regular basis. All positions allocated to this class require that an incumbent be able to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative. Senior Maintenance Workers are typically required to assist in the supervision and training of personnel as assigned. This classification operates the more complex, specialized equipment used in field operation.
Typical Duties
Operate and service all types of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, sweepers, aerial lifts, trucks, tractors, back-hoes, graders and wheel loaders; perform a variety of maintenance work in the construction, repair and maintenance of municipal buildings, streets, parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, storm drains, airport facilities, traffic signals, street lights and utilities; plant and maintain lawns, trees and other plant material on City property; paint and maintain curbs, traffic lines, and street signs and posts; load and unload leaves and rubbish from City streets, gutters and other public areas; clean, flush and rod-out sewers; chip brush and perform grounds maintenance work; cut and patch street surfaces as required; keep records and make reports of supplies used; requisition and maintain tools and equipment; coordinate the work of other employees assigned to the job site, monitoring the consistent application of safe work practices; perform related duties as assigned.
Tools and Equipment Used
Type A, B & C equipment used. Type A includes motor grader, wheel loader, street sweeper, boom slope mower, TV sewer van, back-hoe and accessories to the back-hoe attachment, aerial trucks, Jet Rodder, Champion Sewer Rodder, paint stripping machine, and the compost turner. Type B equipment includes all other power driven equipment not designated as Type A or Type C, including mowers, roller, two- ton dump truck, patch truck, two-ton chip truck with chipper, packer truck, flusher truck (with or without trailer) small farm-type tractors with front-end buckets, mower attachments, flail mower or broom, fork lift, paint truck and trailer, and the Case 580 series or John Deere tractors using the front end bucket or flail mower. Type C equipment includes pick-up truck, one-ton dump truck, one-ton flatbed truck, water truck (without trailer), riding lawnmowers, and chipper equipment used with the chip truck.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of the job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of
Accepted general construction and maintenance practices; use, maintenance and application of basic tools and equipment; safe work practices; safe and efficient operation and maintenance of power equipment, including trucks, wheel loaders, graders, street sweepers, motors, pumps, generators and related equipment; tools, methods and materials used in street, sewer and grounds construction, maintenance and repair.
Ability to
Perform heavy manual labor in varied assignments; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; operate the particular type of equipment assigned; work independently without close supervision; read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, diagrams and sketches; make and keep accurate records; assist in the supervision and training of personnel as assigned; make sound judgments of the safety and appropriate use of a variety of equipment.
Experience
One year of experience performing duties similar to those assigned to the Maintenance Worker class.
Education
Specialized training in public works construction and maintenance work including light and moderately heavy equipment operation.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid Class B California Driver License. Possession of a California Class A Driver License is desirable. Employees assigned to the Facilities Division are required to obtain and maintain FAA "Basic Airport Safety and Operations Specialist" certification.
