Planning Aide

Definition

Under supervision, to perform a variety of routine and repetitive tasks while assisting other planning office staff in the performance of drafting, office work and field inspections; to serve as the initial point of public contact; provide routine information and appropriate referrals; to perform related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the trainee level for planning employees who may not have developed specific office or field skills, have not completed an educational course of study and who have no previous experience. Employees in this class normally work under close supervision, assisting other planning office employees in a variety of simple office and field tasks according to established procedures. Work is generally observed during its performance and reviewed upon its completion.

Typical Duties

Assists in field inspections regarding land use applications and zoning violation complaints; assists in the preparation of illustrative material such as graphs, charts and maps; update and maintain maps and planning files; assists in data collection, analysis and interpretation; may assist the public in understanding and applying zoning and land use regulations; perform related duties as assigned.

Tools and Equipment Used

Personal computer, including word processing, motor vehicle; calculator; phone; copy and fax machine; various graphic design tools.

Physical Demands

Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand or sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office, and moderate to loud in the field.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of

Modern office procedures, equipment and standard clerical techniques; elementary statistics and mathematics; methods of drafting and proper use of drafting instruments.

Ability to

Perform routine office and field work; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; prepare maps, charts and other graphic materials; operate standard office equipment; work cooperatively with other staff and the public.

Experience/Education

High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by courses in drafting, graphics or office skills.

Additional Requirement

Possession of a valid California Driver License.
