Park Attendant

Definition

Under general supervision, to perform varied and routine duties related to park operations and maintenance and assist Park Rangers as requested; perform related work as required.

Typical Duties

Park Attendants are part-time, seasonal positions. Some incumbents may be assigned full-time duty for a limited period; may be assigned to specific programs or areas of City parks or assigned to provide extra help during special events; may perform routine park maintenance responsibilities; perform other park-related work as assigned.

Tools and Equipment Used

Vehicle or pickup truck, pager, variety of hand tools and certain power tools.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of

Public relations; facility maintenance principles, including minor construction, restoration, utility repair, housekeeping, landscape maintenance, and minor equipment repair; principles of customer service objectives and standards, correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; park rules and regulations.

Ability to

Deal tactfully and effectively with individuals and groups; communicate effectively with park staff, park visitors and a wide variety of community groups; read and interpret park policies and regulations; effectively use a wide variety of hand tools; operate automotive and other mechanical equipment used in park operations and maintenance; operate radio, four-wheel drive pick-up, and bicycle; work effectively and safely without direct supervision; analyze situations and take effective action; treat other employees, representatives of other agencies and members of the public with courtesy and respect.

Experience/Education

High school graduation or equivalent preferably supplemented by additional training in natural resources or other related subjects, including one year of volunteer experience or working in public service is desirable.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid California Driver License.
