Definition
Under supervision, to keep watch at a public swimming pool in order to provide for the safety of patrons; to maintain order and discipline; to administer first aid and artificial respiration as needed; to act as a rescuer swimmer when necessary; to perform related work as required.
Typical Duties
Keeps close watch on swimmers, bathers and others using a swimming facility in order to aid users who need assistance and to prevent drowning or other accidents; maintains orderly conduct among pool users by preventing running, unnecessary roughness and improper use of pool facility; goes to the assistance of swimmers when necessary, retrieving them from the water and rendering first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation as appropriate; performs routine pool cleaning and maintenance duties; may supervise lifeguards; accepts full responsibility of enforcing proper pool behavior and pool rules; perform related duties as assigned.
Tools and Equipment Used
Various hand tools used in the maintenance of swimming pool equipment; pool testing equipment; phone.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to swim, walk, sit, and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and occasionally to toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field.
Desired Qualifications
Age
Candidates must be at least 18 years old by date of appointment.
Education
High school graduation or equivalent; one year of college preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Possession of the following current American Red Cross or American Heart Association certificates:
CPR For the Professional Rescuer
Lifeguard Training
Standard and/or Community First Aid *
Additional hours of First Aid Training for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) *
* Valid certification as an Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or EMT-Paramedic can be substituted for the First Aid requirements indicated above.
Experience
None.
Knowledge/Abilities
Good swimming ability; knowledge of life saving methods; application of first aid; ability to supervise the conduct of pool users, maintaining order in a tactful manner; ability to make quick decisions in an emergency; exercise good judgment in dealing with the public; willingness to perform general routine cleaning of pool areas.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid California Driver License.
