Fire Prevention Specialist

Definition

Under general direction, to perform paraprofessional and routine technical and administrative work; to perform work relating to fire inspection, prevention and education programs; and to perform related work as required.

Typical Duties

Enforce fire prevention laws and ordinances; compile evidence and assist in the prosecution of persons charged with violation of fire laws; prepare and answer routine correspondence, including keyboarding of own letters and responses; respond to public requests for information and services, including giving public presentations regarding the City's fire prevention, suppression and education programs; develop, organize, design and edit public and community information regarding fire prevention and written material for brochures, reports, newsletters and other official City publications; may occasionally supervise others; may perform training for the Fire Department and other City employees; review and make recommendations regarding fire prevention approaches and materials; work independently performing assigned tasks; may research, develop, review, and prepare grant applications; assist in the preparation of routine studies, statistical analyses and other administrative activities as necessary; may be subject to emergency recall during non-duty hours; perform related duties as necessary.

Tools and Equipment Used

Vehicle, radio, pager, personal computer, calculator, telephone, emergency medical equipment, and personal protective equipment.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, occasionally on uneven surfaces; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, occasionally in confined spaces; and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 175 pounds or more with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions ranging from below freezing to in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of

Principles and practices of fire code enforcement; principles and practices of public information dissemination techniques and methods; principles and practices of fire suppression, prevention and investigation; principles and practices of municipal organization, administration and budgeting; English usage, spelling, and punctuation; modern office practices and clerical techniques, research, and statistical methods.

Ability to

Enforce fire prevention laws and ordinances; compile evidence and assist in the prosecution of persons charged with violation of fire prevention laws; prepare and answer routine correspondence, including keyboarding of own letters and responses; give public presentations; gather and prepare information and data for public dissemination; exercise appropriate judgment in answering questions and releasing information; clearly communicate ideas and information, both orally and in writing, including the preparation of clear and concise reports and final copy; work cooperatively with citizens and other City employees.

Experience

Three years of experience in fire investigation, prevention, code enforcement, public information or instructional activities.

Education

An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college in fire science, public relations, public education or other related field. A Bachelor’s Degree in fire management, education, or a related field is desirable.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid California Driver License and current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificates. Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is desirable.
