Construction Inspector
Definition
Under general supervision, to perform numerous types of field survey work; to inspect various portions of public works construction projects; to perform a variety of paraprofessional drafting, office and field engineering work as assigned; train others in construction inspection techniques; to perform related work as required.
Typical Duties
Conduct preliminary surveys in the field for a wide range of public works projects; perform stakeouts of construction reference lines and control points for construction projects; inspect workmanship and materials used in the construction of sidewalks, curbs and gutters, street subgrades, asphalt paving, storm and sanitary sewer construction, and public utility installations; perform routine field test on materials; inspect general subdivision construction for compliance with plans, codes and regulations; obtain general field information relating to projects, as directed; assist in laying out and calculating quantities and cost estimates for public works construction projects; prepare charts, graphs, maps, plans and other drawings of existing rights-of-way, utilities, easements, property lines and improvements using field and office notes; check and update as-built drawings, train other employees in construction inspection techniques; perform related assignments as necessary.
Tools and Equipment Used
Personal computer, including word processing, spreadsheet, and data base software; pipe locator, pressure gauges, testing equipment, engineering calculator, motor vehicle, phone, mobile or portable radio, and density gauge.
Physical Demands
Work is performed mostly in field settings. Considerable outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate testing instruments, computers and various pieces of office and field equipment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions.
The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of
Engineering mathematics, including basic trigonometry and geometry; principles and practices of engineering surveying; construction methods and materials; local, State and Federal construction codes and regulations.
Ability to
Use field surveying instruments and other engineering equipment relative to construction; read and interpret plans and specifications; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with various construction personnel; understand and carry out technical instructions as they relate to field survey work and construction inspection; maintain logs and reports as required; learn to perform complex engineering drafting work to reduce, interpret and apply field notes in performance of drafting duties; train other employees.
Experience
Four years of responsible experience in public works inspection and surveying. Experience in engineering drafting highly desirable.
Education
High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by relevant course work in civil engineering, architecture or other related fields.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid California Driver License.
