Reserve Police Officer
Definition
Under supervision, to receive Police Officer basic academy training in a wide variety of law enforcement assignments; to perform non-sworn duties as required in a training, Police Department, or field setting; to perform other academy related work as required.
Typical Duties
Reserve Police Officers will be assigned duties as authorized by under State law, based on their level of training and certification. Such duties may include: Assist in directing and controlling vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic; assist in controlling crowds at major events, gatherings, disasters, and other special events; assist in the transporting and booking of prisoners; enforce laws and ordinances as assigned; prepare necessary reports; ride as a partner with a regular non-probationary Police Officer, operate a police vehicle while directly supervised; participate in training activities; perform related duties as assigned.
Tools and Equipment Used
Police car, police radio, radar gun, handgun and other weapons as required; sidehandle baton, handcuffs, Intoxilyzer, pager, first aid equipment.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or operate controls, objects, and/or tools listed above, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and taste and/or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places, and with explosives, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Observe, remember, record, and recall pertinent facts and details; apply selected knowledge (i.e., laws, department policies, etc.) in analyzing information in order to decide on an appropriate and reasonable course of action; rationally and calmly take effective action in emergency situations; deal courteously but firmly with the general public; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; complete thorough, legible, and timely reports; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and apply physical arrest procedures and search techniques.
Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalent and completion of Peace Officers Standards Training (POST) required Penal Code 832 Module A training. Advancement to POST Level II or I Reserve Officer status will require additional education, experience, and completion of a Field Training Program, as defined by POST. ADDITIONAL STATE OF CALIFORNIA REQUIREMENTS (§ 1031.5 GOVT CODE) a. Be at least 18 years of age. b. Be a citizen of the United States; or be a permanent resident alien and have applied for citizenship at least one year prior to application for employment as a Reserve Police Officer. A person who has not obtained citizenship within three years after application for employment due to non-cooperation with the government agency processing the citizenship application, or a person who has been denied citizenship, are disqualified from being or becoming a Reserve Police Officer.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid California Driver License; possess vision, hearing, strength and agility at a level necessary to perform the duties of a Police Officer.
