Job Title
Landscape Inspector
Definition
Under general supervision, to inspect contractors performing installation, operation, maintenance and repair of landscape facilities on City property; to compile the necessary records of accomplished work or unsatisfactory work; to review and monitor utility consumption; to investigate tree and landscape maintenance requests and provide analysis of situation to the Urban Forester; to perform related work as required.
Typical Duties
Initiate, schedule, and inspect as required, the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of city landscape and other public landscape facilities, including maintenance assessment districts and new landscape installation; inspect and evaluate service requests, and coordinate work with city staff and outside contractors; perform various related administrative activities; write, clear and accurate reports; monitor electricity and water usage and verify accurate distribution of costs; program and operate central irrigation control systems; perform related assignments as necessary.
Tools and Equipment Used
Type C equipment including pick-up truck; telephone, personal computer, copiers and fax machines; landscape diagnostic tools, hand tools.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to find, finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate quiet.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of
Landscape construction and maintenance practices; safe and efficient work practices; record keeping and reporting procedures; pruning requirements and typical disease/pests of trees and landscape plants in the Chico area; factors in the urban environment that effect tree and landscape performance; chemicals used in tree and landscape maintenance; irrigation construction and maintenance, involving Evapotranspiration, system design; Advanced Irrigation Management System (AIMS), soil management; plant identification and maintenance requirements.
Desired Qualifications Continued
Ability to
Knowledgeably and effectively communicate with contractors and citizens; read and interpret maps, construction plans, blueprints, specifications and work orders; detect, analyze and take appropriate action to correct maintenance problems; monitor multiple projects and forecast maintenance needs.
Experience
Four years of work experience directly related to the area of work assignment including contract administration and inspection, tree and park maintenance, and supervisory experience. An Associates Degree in ornamental horticulture may be substituted for two of the four years experience.
Education
High School graduation or equivalent supplemented to by special training in trees, parks, traffic safety, right-of-way and landscape construction, inspection, maintenance and repair.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License. Possession of California Qualified Applicator License, categories "B" or "Q."
