Community Service Officer I
Definition
Under general supervision, to perform varied and routine non-sworn police work with an emphasis on prisoner booking and transportation, parking enforcement, community outreach, information collection and record keeping; to perform related work as assigned.
Typical Duties
Typical duties may vary from routine, non-sworn police work to more complex duties of a similar nature; serves subpoenas; books and transports prisoners; may patrol the City to enforce City parking and bicycle laws; may patrol the various City parks to enforce applicable laws, rules and regulations; issues citations; takes less complex police reports; may investigate non-injury accidents; assists in the investigation of fraud and forgery cases; conducts accident and crime scene investigations as appropriate; may provide security at various locations; may direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic; may testify in court; may coordinate and organize community outreach activities such as crime prevention, neighborhood watch groups, public safety awareness, etc.; serves in alternative assignments such as Traffic, Investigations, and Special Operations; performs related duties as required.
Tools and Equipment Used
Personal computer, including word processing and specialized software, police radio, phone, typewriter, calculator, fax machine, copy machine, Live Scan fingerprinting equipment, cameras, computerized ticket machines. Police vehicles, police radio, pager, first aid equipment, pepper spray, handcuffs, ankle restraints, transport belts/chains.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must be able to use prisoner control techniques to subdue arrestees.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in outside weather conditions, or may work inside in the office or in the holding facility in direct contact with persons who have been arrested or detained. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office to moderately noisy in the field.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of
English usage, spelling, and punctuation.
Ability to
Deal tactfully and effectively with the public; understand written and oral instructions; write clear and accurate reports; operate radio, telephone, and Computer-Aided Dispatch equipment; learn basic computer skills, including word processing; work effectively without direct supervision; analyze situations and take effective action; to successfully complete formal training courses on job-related responsibilities including Module A of the Peace Officer Standards and Training Agency (POST) Penal Code 832 course within twelve months of appointment.
Experience/Education
High school graduation or equivalent
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid California Driver License.
