Job Title:

Assistant Head Lifeguard

Definition

Under general supervision, to assist the head lifeguard in instructing and supervising pool lifeguards; assume the responsibilities of Head Lifeguard as necessary; to keep watch at a public swimming facility in order to provide for the safety of patrons; to maintain order and discipline; to administer first aid and artificial respiration as needed; to act as a rescuer swimmer when necessary; assist in the maintenance of assigned facility and equipment; assign rotations and work breaks; to perform related work as required.

Typical Duties

Exercise functional and technical supervision over lifeguards in the absence of the head lifeguard; provide swimming techniques and life guarding skills training to lifeguards; ensure adherence of proper safety precautions to lifeguards and patrons; keep close watch on swimmers, bathers and others using a swimming facility in order to aid users who need assistance and to prevent drowning or other accidents; maintain orderly conduct among pool users; perform routine cleaning; inventory, replenishment of supplies and equipment, document information as required; interpret and explain City policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Tools and Equipment Used

Various hand tools used in the maintenance of equipment; aquatic testing equipment; telephone.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to swim, walk, sit, and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid/hot conditions, and occasionally to toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field.

Desired Qualifications

Age

Candidates must be at least 18 years old by date of appointment.

Education

High school graduation or equivalent, supplemented by specialized lifeguard training. One year of college preferred.

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of the following current American Red Cross or American Heart Association certificates:

CPR For the Professional Rescuer
Lifeguard Training
Standard and/or Community First Aid *
Additional hours of First Aid Training for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) *

* Valid certification as an Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or EMT-Paramedic can be substituted for the First Aid requirements indicated above.

 

Experience

One year (season) of responsible experience as a lifeguard.

Knowledges of

Knowledge of lifeguard skills instruction techniques; advanced pool lifeguarding principles and practices; knowledge of life saving methods; record keeping methods and techniques; occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.

Ability to

Teach and instruct lifeguards in lifeguarding and safety techniques; interpret and explain City policies and procedures; swimming ability with endurance and proficiency at a level necessary to perform assigned duties; prepare clear and concise reports; communicate clear and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with both the public and other City staff; make sound decisions in an emergency; supervise other lifeguards; perform general routine cleaning.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid California Driver License.
