Accounting Technician I

Definition

Under general direction, to perform complex, difficult, fiducial, and professional accounting work of a technical nature; to operate computerized accounting systems involving a broad range of record keeping functions, and to perform related work as assigned.

Disinguishing Characteristics

The class is distinguished from the Senior Account Clerk class in that the duties assigned to this class require a broad range of knowledge and skill relating to the City's general ledger accounting records and assumes lead responsibility in the operation of computerized accounting equipment and systems. Positions assigned to this class exercise considerable independent initiative in setting daily work priorities and solving difficult accounting problems.

Typical Duties

Assume lead responsibility in the performance of a wide variety of routine and complex accounting and analytical tasks such as reconciliation and financial analysis, financial reporting, records storage and retrieval utilizing computerized accounting systems, and review of financial information and reports prepared by clerical staff; prepare, reconcile, and maintain financial, payroll, revenue, expenditure, investment, banking, and inventory reports and records; conduct analysis of financial information and develop and maintain a variety of statistical and financial reports; prepare audit and budget documents; may assist in the training and supervision of other clerical accounting personnel; perform related duties as assigned.

Tools and Equipment Used

Personal computer, including word processing and spreadsheet software; computerized accounting system; ten-key calculator; telephone; copy machine; fax machine.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of

Accounting principles, practices, and procedures utilized in a municipal accounting system; procedure and terminology related to a general ledger accounting system and the use of computerized accounting systems; personal computer based spreadsheet and word processing applications; modern office methods, procedures, and equipment including personal computer based spreadsheet and word processing applications.

Ability to

Operate complex computerized accounting systems; operate a ten-key by touch at a rate sufficient to perform the duties of the position; develop and maintain accurate financial records in accordance with established procedures; analyze records; operate general office equipment; utilize spreadsheet and word processing programs and computerized accounting system; work independently with a minimum of supervision; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work cooperatively with others.

Experience

Three years responsible accounting experience performing duties similar to those assigned to a Senior Account Clerk for the City of Chico. Related education in excess of the required level may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.

Education

Associate's Degree in Accounting or a related field. Completion of the equivalent of 60 semester units of college course work toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a related field may be substituted for the Associates’s Degree, so long as such education includes at least the equivalent of six semester units in accounting. Possession of a non-accounting Bachelor’s Degree which includes at least 20 semester units of Accounting, Business, or Information Systems course work may also be substituted for the Associate’s Degree. Experience in excess of the required level may be substituted for the required education.
