City Council

The Chico City Council is composed of seven council members elected to staggered four-year terms. There is an election each November of even numbered years with either three or four seats up for election. In cases where a council member is unable to complete a term, the Council can appoint a replacement, but that position will be subject to a vote at the next general election.

The Council selects a mayor and vice mayor from among its members to serve two-year terms. The mayor presides over the Council meetings, which are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. Normally, Council meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, 421 Main Street. Meetings also are televised live on Cable Channel 11. Click here for more info on Council Meeting Conduct.

In addition to the regularly scheduled meetings, council members attend numerous additional meetings, hearings, workshops and committee meetings. The Council has two standing committees, Finance and Internal Affairs.

The Council establishes and adopts the policies for the City and one of its major functions is the review and adoption of the City budget.

Chico City Council Meetings and Minutes

DVDs are retained of the current years meetings and are available for public viewing in the City Manager's office on the 3rd floor in the Municipal Building at 411 Main Street. Printed copies of minutes from City Council, Boards and Commissions meetings can be requested from the City Clerk for a small fee. They are also available at the "Council Minutes and Agendas" web page where you can print documents from your personal computer.
