Project Update

State Route 32 Widening Project

City Council Consideration of Environmental Impact Report

What is the project?

The City of Chico, in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is proposing to widen and improve approximately 2.6 miles of State Route 32 between State Route 99 and Yosemite Drive. The purpose of the proposed project is to provide additional capacity needed as a result of approved and planned development adjacent to the State Route 32 corridor.

What is the next step?

The City has studied the effects that this project may have on the environment.  The Environmental Impact Report (EIR) identified that the project would result in the following significant and unavoidable environmental impacts:  permanent changes to views and the loss of trees in the short-term until replacement trees mature.  Other project-related environmental impacts would be mitigated to a less-than-significant level with implementation of the recommended mitigation measures.

The 45 day Draft EIR review and comment period commenced on February 25, 2010 and closed on April 12, 2010. Comments received through the public review period of the Draft EIR, associated responses, and the mitigation monitoring and reporting program are included in the Final EIR. The Council will act upon the project and recommended mitigation measures within the EIR defining the ultimate project design.

The Chico City Council will be considering certifying the EIR and approving the SR 32 Widening project at their regularly scheduled July 6, 2010 meeting at 6:30 p.m.  The public meeting will be held at the following location:

City of Chico Council Chambers

421 Main Street

Chico, CA 95928
