Background:

Chico’s Bicycle Business Challenge happens during the annual Bike to Work Week in May. Businesses that enter the challenge are sorted by employee size then given a “base point” rating attained from the strength of their bicycle incentive plan, bike parking arrangements, and the availability of employee showers and lockers. Then during the week of the competition, businesses are scored on a combination of ridership percentage and commute mileage. Daily outcomes are posted on the City’s web page.

Local annual incentive plan examples:

Employees can include their ride time to work in their workday.

Every month cycle commuters put a business card in a jar each day they ride.  At the end of the month, there's a drawing for either a $1,000 gift, or 5 $200 gifts.

15 minute grace period for bike commuters.

One dollar reward for each commute.

Employees receive a t-shirt and prize ($10-$15) for signing up; free bike tune ups and patch repair kits for all participants; quarterly drawings for employees meeting their pledges for 3 consecutive months ($40-$45); a drawing for two $500 bikes every April for employees who met their pledges all year.
